How do we decipher fact from fiction? How do we determine whether the latest diet trend is actually healthy? How do we make sense of nutritional recommendations or warnings?

As you learn about the human body, you will also explore the role of nutrition and exercise through your course project. The foods you consume and the physical activities you do have an impact on the overall function and wellness of your body. A healthy diet must provide essential nutrients in proper proportions and amounts. Consuming too few or too many macro-nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) or micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) can disturb the delicate balances in body function that contribute to overall health.


In this unit’s assignment, you will submit your nutrition and fitness goals. In Unit 6, you will begin to track your nutrition and fitness activities. Complete the following at this time to make sure you are ready to begin this unit’s assignment:

You may want to consider goals that involve improvements in your diet, such as increasing whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, or a reduction in refined sugar consumption. Fitness goals may include walking your dog, going to a gym, weightlifting, or other physical activities in which you enjoy participating.

For each goal that you set, you will want to choose specific indicators—steps or actions—that you can actually measure. For example, if your goal is to improve your diet, you might want to reduce your intake of saturated fat or sodium. That is something you can actually measure and track. If your goal is to improve your fitness by making exercise a regular part of your routine, you might add an extra block or mile to your daily walk, take the stairs at work, or start a more specific exercise program. You may choose to focus on cardiovascular exercises or strength-building routines. You can then track the distance involved or the time that you spend doing these things.
