Running head: FACILITY DESIGN OVERVIEW Facility Design OverviewTeam AHCS/446April 11, 2016Jennifer Freel 1 FACILITY DESIGN OVERVIEW 2 Facility Design OverviewIntroductionBrief description of the history of healthcare1930 until current year 2016 has been jam-packed full of events in history in regards tothe healthcare field. The stale cold walls of the hospital of yesterday were littered with lengthystays including lack of respect and lack of prevention. Patient segregation, long stays, introduction of nurse practitioners, and the right to be involved in your own health care. Many of us don’t think about the impact of segregation but during the early 20th centuryrace until the 1960’s, religion, gender all determined your care and service in the healthcaresetting. Floors, sections and wings segregated these patients and even the care and betteramenities provided to white patients was a fact. During the 1970’s an issue that burdened ourhospitals until this point was lengthily stays, until this time some women stayed in the hospitalfor up to 10 days when giving birth to a child, and a simple hernia surgery could have a patienthospitalized for four days which now is an outpatient service (Leonard, 2014). The 1970’s alsobrought about the option to see a nurse practioner. Due to doctor’s bust schedules and theiroffices growing the need allowed for nurse practioners to offer care under doctor’s provisions. In2003 rules were updated and tightened again in 2011 (Leonard, 2014).The final change I would like to note is patient empowerment. Leonard (2014), “If youwere a married woman with cancer in the 1950s or ’60s, there was a chance you wouldn’t beinformed of your diagnosis – though your husband likely would be. Some physicians felt thatknowing you could have a potentially negative or life-threatening diagnosis could hurt patients’psychological health, and therefore affect their prognosis, Kernahan says (Hospital of Yesterday:The Biggest Changes in Health Care). In today’s healthcare model patient awareness, involvement and honesty is most important.
