Reflect: The arrival of Europeans in the Americas brought about a series of consequences, both intended and unintended, that differed over time, place, and effects. Contact with the multitude of societies and cultures of the Americas took many forms, including, but not limited to, conflict, collaboration, alliance, aggression, accommodation, dominance, or negotiation—and in many cases, a combination of these strategies. In each instance, however, contact was conditioned by the cultural heritage of each group or individual, which affected the ways that each group perceived the other. This cultural heritage could include ideas and practices concerning political organization, social stratification, economic interaction, religion, or gender norms. The Atlantic World was thus intricately and intimately shaped by the complex patterns of interaction between its many peoples.
